Working in English can feel very different from studying it. You may understand the conversation but hesitate before joining in, or know what you want to say but worry that it will sound too direct. These challenges are normal—and they can be practised.
Start with clarification
You do not need to pretend that you understood everything. Natural phrases include: “Could you run that by me again?”, “Just to make sure I’ve understood…” and “Do you mean that…?” Asking clearly is a professional skill, not a weakness.
Make meetings easier
Prepare two or three phrases before a meeting: one to introduce an idea, one to agree or disagree politely and one to ask a question. Useful openings include “From my perspective…”, “I can see your point; however…” and “Could we also consider…?”
Learn the purpose of small talk
In many UK workplaces, short conversations about the weekend, travel or the weather help build trust. You do not need complicated vocabulary. A relaxed question and a brief follow-up are often enough.
Practise your real situations
The most useful Business English practice is specific. Rehearse your next presentation, improve an email you genuinely need to send or role-play a conversation with your manager. Real context makes new language easier to remember and use.
